Hand Hydration

by | 2nd Nov 2020

A SURGEON FRIEND of mine has horrendous hands, dry, red, cracked and sore from constantly washing them before surgery, using gels every time he walks on the ward and before and after he touches every patient. Now many of us are getting that way too with the highly effective commandment to wash our hands and use gels and sprays frequently during the Covid Crisis.
The hand cream he recommended wasn’t a hand cream at all but Waitrose’s Baby Bottom Butter, cheap if you could find it as it was so popular and really effective at leaving your hands, soft, moisturised and not greasy for a reasonable time after. It was my number one pick but SADLY they’ve discontinued it.
Personally I’ve bought and tried dozens of creams over the years as I’m always being seduced by the next best thing, I’ve even tried Sudocrem Antiseptic Healing Cream which is highly effective as a chamois cream for long bike rides but less so on your hands.
After many trials these are my three favourites. All smell good and leave my hands feeling smooth and hydrated for hours. They don’t have a strong floral smell and come in simple neutral packaging so are suitable for men and women. I buy lots and leave everywhere.

  • Boots No7 Protect & Perfect Intense Advanced Nourishing Hand and Nail Treatment. £11.50 for 75ML.

I bought this at an airport two years ago en route to Nepal and have never regretted it. I wait for the 3 for 2 special offers which are frequent and stock up. There is also a version with SPF15.

  • Crabtree and Evelyn Gardeners Hand Cream. £20.50 for 75ML.

About two decades ago I visited the lovely store in Edinburgh, and this was recommended by the staff there. I still love it. Sadly, the store is now closed but you can buy online and in high street stores.

  • Margaret Dabbs London Intensive Hydrating Hand Lotion, £14.00 for 75ML.

I was recently seduced into buying a Margaret Dabbs foot cream by an India Knight piece in The Times. While on the website I also bought the above and fell in love with it so I ordered lots more and a supply for my boyfriend as I know he’ll love it too.
